Training & Academic Background
Dr. Patel’s commitment to dermatology began with her internal medicine residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago, followed by advanced dermatology training at Loyola University Medical Center. As Chief Resident (2005–2008), she honed her clinical acumen with responsibilities at Loyola Hospital and the Hines VA Medical Center. Prior to that, she worked as a Clinical Research Fellow (2003–2005) in Loyola’s Department of Dermatology, where she served as Principal Investigator on trials investigating biologic therapies for psoriasis. That early research experience helped shape her evidence-based approach to patient care.
Her foundational academic preparation includes an MS in Biotechnology from Northwestern University (1996), complementing her strong scientific background, and a BA in Economics from the University of Chicago (1995).
Expertise, Research & Academic Contributions
Dr. Patel merges practical dermatologic care with a strong foundation in research and academic scholarship. Early in her career, she led and participated in studies focusing on psoriasis and biologic therapies, which deepened her understanding of complex dermatologic diseases and treatment modalities. Her broader research interests have included immunofluorescence virology, gene-therapy development, cancer-cell promoter sequencing, and vascular/dermatologic intersections of systemic disease.
Over the years, she has published in peer-reviewed journals such as Dermatologic Therapy and British Journal of Dermatology, with notable work on the safety and efficacy of biologic agents for skin and systemic diseases. She has also delivered invited lectures at major professional meetings and contributed as a co-author to recognized dermatology reference texts.
Community Engagement & Service
Committed to community health and outreach, Dr. Patel has volunteered extensively in skin cancer screening programs through the American Academy of Dermatology and the Chicago Dermatological Society. She has also contributed to broader civic initiatives, including serving on the boards of Meals on Wheels Chicago and the Grant Park Music Festival, supporting community wellbeing beyond skin health.
